About The Builder
Jim Coons
Owner
Jim Coons, owner of Coons Construction, began his career in construction in 1983 while still in high school, working summers and breaks for a high-quality local construction firm. There, Jim discovered his passion for building and decided to go out on his own in 1987. Since then, Coons Construction has become a trusted name in Madison, known for working on some of the area’s finest homes. From framing and exterior details to finish carpentry, Jim has always prided himself on using the most skilled local craftsmen and ensuring that every project meets his high standards of quality and precision.
Jim’s hands-on approach sets Coons Construction apart. He is on-site, involved in every stage of the process, and committed to maintaining the highest level of quality control. His decades of experience have taken him to some of Madison’s most prestigious neighborhoods—Blackhawk, Seminole Highlands, Bishops Bay, and along the lakes—as well as rural estates across the region. Over the years, Jim has general-contracted more than 100 custom homes, always building strong relationships with clients and subcontractors alike.
Family is at the heart of Jim’s life and work. Growing up in Verona with seven siblings, Jim learned the importance of family values, which continue to guide him today. He and his wife, Nancy, have three children: two sons and a daughter. His son Zach now works alongside him, continuing the family tradition. For Jim, building a home is about more than just construction; it’s about creating a space where families can grow and make memories, just as his family has done.
Outside of work, Jim’s passions include riding dirt bikes, watching sports, and spending time with his family. Whether he’s working on a project or enjoying time outdoors, Jim’s dedication to quality, integrity, and family values shines through in everything he does.
Zach Coons
Construction Manager
Zach Coons grew up immersed in the family business, starting with a broom in hand, cleaning up job sites, and working his way up as he got older. He spent weekends and summers learning the trade firsthand at Coons Construction. Zach continued to expand his knowledge by earning a degree in Building Construction Management from UW-Platteville, where he mastered not only the technical aspects of construction but also the business side of the industry, including commercial projects.
With a passion for hands-on work, Zach enjoys getting involved in every step of the building process, paying close attention to detail and ensuring that each project—big or small—is completed to the highest standard. His love for working with his hands extends beyond the job site, as he spends his free time riding dirt bikes, working on anything with a motor, and tackling home projects. Zach and his wife, Theresa, are starting a family of their own, which brings an even deeper appreciation for building homes that create warmth and togetherness. Zach's strong family values are reflected in his work, as he takes great pride in creating homes that are perfect for his clients' families.
